SA 8000 is an international certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. SA 8000 is for Organizations who want to demonstrate their commitment for employee welfare. Suppliers to big buying houses to demonstrate compliance to social accountability requirements. Those seeking to comply with SA8000 has to adopt policies and procedures that protect the basic human rights of workers. Below are the nine elements in the SA8000 Standard, with links to each corresponding section in the 2008 Guidance Document:
SA 8000 provides no use of child labor in the industry. It provides financial and other support to children to attend schools.
SA 8000 provides no use for forced labor. No withholding salary, benefits, property or documents to force staffs to continue work; staffs right to leave premises after workday; staffs free to terminate their employment; and no use nor support for human trafficking.
SA 8000 provides a safe and healthy workplace; prevent potential occupational accidents. It’s providing personal protection equipment and medical attention in event of work-related damage.
All employees are free to organize trade unions of their choice and bargain collectively with their employer. Not interfere in workers’ organizations or collective bargaining
SA 8000 provides no discrimination based on race, national or social origin, caste, religion, birth, disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, political opinions and union membership.
Treat all employees with pride and respect; zero tolerance of physical punishment, mental or physical abuse of employees.
Compliance with laws & industry standards; normal workweek, not including overtime, shall not exceed 48 hours; 1 day off following every 6 consecutive work days.
Respect right of employees to living income; all workers paid at least legal minimum income; earnings sufficient to meet basic needs & provide discretionary income; deductions not for disciplinary purposes, with some exceptions; wages and benefits clearly communicated to workers.
